Position Summary

Teacher Assistant:
Pre Kindergarten – Reports to Principal (2026-27 school year)

Job Summary

Assists the instructional staff in implementing plans and programs related to the academic and specialized areas to which the assistant is assigned. Performs various non‑instructional tasks that support the teaching‑learning process. Works directly with students individually or in small groups to reinforce subject matter introduced by the teacher, assists teachers in planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional lessons, observes students to assess progress, participates in staff development, and prepares instructional materials.

All work is planned and implemented under the direction of the principal and the professional staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Works directly with students individually or in small groups to reinforce subjects initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Assists teachers in planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional lessons, methods, strategies, and materials to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Organizes materials for each group or student; sets up learning stations, laboratories, and activity centers; supervises students while working and assists those having difficulty.
  • Leads and/or facilitates group discussions, sharing time, and individual recitation or work.
  • Prepares a variety of instructional materials, including posters, charts, transparencies, game boards/cards, and other related items; assists with bulletin boards, exhibits, and displays.
  • Observes and gathers assessment data on students and discusses observations or progress with instructional staff.
  • Provides assistance to the instructional staff in the supervision of students in the classroom; may supervise lunch, playground, and bus duties as directed.
  • Assists in the administration of tests and assessment instruments; records data to record books, master charts, and assessment forms.
  • Performs clerical tasks such as correcting worksheets/tests, keeping daily attendance, maintaining student folders/records, and other related tasks as assigned.
  • Works with teachers and students on special projects, lessons, and assignments.
  • Assists in storing, inventorying, and requisitioning instructional materials, supplies, and equipment as directed.
  • Assists with non‑instructional self‑help skills, such as dressing, toileting, and personal hygiene.
  • Aids in organization and housekeeping tasks for laboratory, learning stations, work areas, or other instructional settings.
  • Attends and actively participates in staff development activities.
  • Recommends or accompanies disruptive students to the principal.
  • Accompanies students on field trips.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • Associate’s Degree in a related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university, in lieu of a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.
  • For Title I‑funded schools: 48 college credit hours or a passing score on a paraprofessional assessment issued by ETS or NES.
Experience
  • Previous training and/or experience in an educational or instructional environment preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Willingness to learn and implement instructional methods, strategies, and techniques to assist teachers in the education of students.
  • Ability to exercise considerable patience, courtesy, tact, and good judgment in working with students, teachers, administrators, employees, and parents.
  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., video/Web conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
