Position: Utilities Special Crew Leader (Infrastructure)

Position Description

This posting will be used to fill Full-Time Safety Sensitive positions in the Department of Public Works, Infrastructure Division. This is limited supervisory and skilled work in the general maintenance of wastewater lines and related facilities of the Utility Department.

Nature and Variety of Work

Work involves responsibility for supervising and participating in the activities of wastewater line maintenance crews and of road crews engaged in cleaning wastewater pumping station or televising and/or grouting sewer lines of the Utility Department. Work is performed with independence but according to established procedures; however, the more unusual or difficult work may be outlined by a superior. Work is subject to inspection by superior while in progress and upon completion.

  • Supervises and participates in the work of crews engaged in televising and/or grouting sewer lines or in cleaning utilizing wastewater pumping stations.
  • Operates specialized technical equipment involved in cleaning pumping station wet walls or televising and/or grouting of wastewater sewer lines.
  • Supervises and participates in maintenance of wastewater collection systems; investigates complaints from the pumping station supervisor; oversees routine maintenance of equipment.
  • Disposes of material from cleaning/grouting in accordance with standard procedures and landfill permit.
  • Confers with superiors on new or revised work methods and procedures; interprets work methods and procedures to subordinates; maintains various work and employee records.
  • Prepares forms, types reports identifying work completed/required.
  • Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the practices, materials, tools, equipment, and processes of the area of assignment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools and equipment, and of the safety precautions applicable to the work.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and minor repair of equipment routinely used.
  • Ability to supervise the work of subordinate unskilled and semi-skilled employees performing various maintenance tasks and to appraise the employee's performance.
  • Ability to operate/use vacuum truck, television inspection/grouting equipment, blower, gas detector, and various small tools.
  • Ability to maintain effective public service with a minimum of interruption to public convenience.
  • Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions, grade and line stakes, and routine engineering drawings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, other employees, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school; four (4) or more years experience in maintenance, repair, and construction of water and wastewater systems and operation of specialized water or wastewater equipment; six (6) or more months lead worker experience; a temporary wastewater collection system certificate at hire and meeting the education and experience requirement and passing the appropriate board examination to obtain the Class II wastewater collection system operator’s certificate within the renewal time period of three years as established by the State;

and a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license.

NOTE:

The (4) or more years experience in maintenance, repair, and construction of water AND wastewater systems may be substituted with five (5) or more years experience in maintenance, repair, and construction of water OR wastewater systems, which includes an additional one year of the required experience.
