Bridge Testing Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician III)
State Highway Administration – Anne Arundel County. Grade 12 (8448) SP# 25‑73‑12. Open recruitment for candidates who meet the minimum and selective qualifications listed below.
Nature of WorkAssist the Bridge Team Crew Chief in performing bridge deck and substructure condition survey activities statewide. Responsibilities include conducting testing, collecting samples and data, drafting reports, analyzing results, and using Computer‑Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software. The Technician supports nondestructive testing (NDT) with 3D GPR on bridges and pavements, evaluates data, drafts reports, reviews consultant work, and provides progress reports. The role performs bridge condition surveys with limited supervision and reports directly to the Crew Chief.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- High‑school diploma or high‑school equivalency certificate.
- Three (3) years of technical engineering experience in design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance or planning.
Selective
Qualification:
One and a half (1.5) years of experience in bridge deck testing, transportation infrastructure inspection, or pavement and bridge maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of basic mathematics and ability to perform calculations.
- Basic knowledge of CADD using Micro Station.
- Basic knowledge of Temporary Traffic Control Standards and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Basic knowledge of Federal Highway Regulations and criteria for in‑service bridge conditions.
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn functions.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain relationships with employees and the public.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Valid motor‑vehicle operator's license in Maryland.
- Temporary Traffic Control Manager Certification obtained within the probationary period.
- Must routinely travel statewide on overnight stays up to two (2) weeks for data collection.
- Available to work extended hours during the work week and occasionally weekends for data collection.
