Senior Field Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician V)

Nature of WorkPosition is in the Office of Materials Technology’s (OMT) Asphalt Technology Division and serves as a Quality Assurance (QA) Inspector for the Asphalt Quality Assurance (QA) Program. The Senior Field Technician audits, evaluates, and enforces proper manufacture, shipment, and placement of asphalt mixes statewide. The role ensures that the asphalt mix accepted for payment in SHA projects complies with complex quality level standards and specifications.
The Senior Field Technician oversees the sampling, testing, and inspection activities performed by contractor QC Certified Technicians at manufacturing and placement sites, and has the authority to make independent, on‑the‑spot decisions regarding material acceptance or rejection or to mandate corrective action.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education:
Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. - Experience:
Eight (8) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
Selective
Qualification:
- Three (3) years of experience in engineering applications of asphalt mixtures, binders or emulsions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Excellent computer and data analysis skills.
- Knowledge of Asphalt Mix Design, Plants and AASHTO testing procedures.
- Knowledge of construction and material specifications.
Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
2. Applicants who possess an associate degree in either engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the eight-year experience requirement.
- Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.
- Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Level I and Hot Mix Asphalt Field Certifications must be received within one (1) year (or next available class) of assuming the position.
Special Requirements:
- Employees in this role are on‑call and must be able to be reached by phone.
- Employees will be required to work various shifts, and on weekends depending on assignments.
- Employees will be required to travel long distances in Maryland and neighboring states.
