Reports to: Coordinator
Job SummaryResponsible for facilitating cross-cultural communication by converting one language into another to ensure meaningful and accurate communication between two parties who do not speak the same language.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities- Provide consecutive interpretation services at one-on-one or small group meetings.
- Provide simultaneous interpretation service at larger meetings or when requested at small group meetings.
- Sight translate documents upon request during meetings.
- Make phone calls to families who speak languages other than English.
- Maintain interpreter ethics at all times.
- Research relevant issues and technical terms as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university preferred.
- AACPS Interpreter Training Part 1:
Basic Interpreter Skills and Ethics, Part 2 (for work in special education). Interpreting in Special Education Settings required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of school system terminology.
- Excellent listening, verbal, and written language skills for both English and another language.
- Ability to accurately interpret conversation and presentation.
- Knowledge of advanced grammar and usage in both languages.
- Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement in student learning.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill and experience to support their child’s education experience.
- Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required.
- Daily access to reliable transportation.
- Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business within the scope of employment in this position.
- Personal Vehicle.
- No special vision requirements.
- Travel within the county to different schools.
Temporary salaries are set at the time of hire, up to $30.00.
