This position is responsible for:

  • Planning, developing, scheduling, coordinating, facilitating, and monitoring a variety of educational, musical, recreational, religious and spiritual development programs activities, events, and trips for the children and young adults; plans and conducts outreach to local families (bilingual English/Spanish preferred), builds and maintains a positive relationship with the children, youth and their parents; builds relationships with other agencies, as well as seeking to recruit volunteers to provide leadership to Salvation Army youth and music programs;

    provides Christian leadership to the youth in order to encourage their spiritual and religious development. Adheres to and promotes Salvation Army's doctrines and mission. Supports Corps Officers and the overall ministry of the Corps.
  • Ministers to youth and work with Officers, Soldiers, congregation, and staff to oversee the successful operation and growth of youth and music programs.
  • Responsible for management, growth, development, and promotion of Corps youth ministry programming (i.e. Troops, Jr Soldiers, Corps Cadets, Sunday School, Youth Group, Junior Church and Nursery and other Corps Programs).
  • Attend and participate in Sunday services and other Corps programs.
  • Strengthen relationships with children and their families through visitation with children and their families from the neighborhood, Corps, and who attended camp.
  • Responsible for recruitment, training, development and coordination of leaders and volunteers for all Corps ministry youth programs. Where volunteer leaders cannot be secured, be prepared to lead strategically selected programs as needed.
  • Work with teachers, volunteers, and other ministry staff to develop and improve existing Sunday school program and grow attendance. This will include competitions and special events.
  • Oversee, recruit and train ministry volunteers to grow Corps Community Night (youth) programs.
  • Promote Junior Soldiers and Corps Cadets discipleship programs, recruit leaders. When there are no leaders, be responsible for overseeing these classes.
  • Create and oversee a vibrant youth group.
  • Promote and recruit youth to participate in corps ministry and outreach.
  • Organize and recruit drivers for pick-up routes as needed for programs of responsibility.
  • Be responsible for all clerical support for correspondence, record-keeping, filing and attendance at meetings related to programs responsibility.
  • Promote Sunday attendance at The Salvation Army to all children and families.
  • Develop Youth programs to include those that are a part of the Excellence in Youth Programming Initiative.
  • Works with Divisional Music Department to establish, develop and oversee a School of Music program.
  • Develops volunteer leadership – meet with high school and college staff to find students who plan to go into the field of teaching or youth work/ministry; speak with churches about sending short-term missionaries to TSA; explore other local resources for people to do youth and/or music ministry.
  • Builds and nurtures positive relationships with the youth; serves as a mentor and role model by leading youth by example; shares meals and fellowship time with the youth; provides individual spiritual guidance when needed; remains available and interruptible to youth's needs and may be required to respond to emergency situations outside of normal hours of work in order to meet the needs of the youth.
  • Seeks to discover ways to build a bridge between youth programs that may not be a part of the traditional Corps programs (i.e. BGCA, Community Center, etc.) and the Corps' religious programming, with the end result to get youth active in the Corps' religious programming and services and enrolled as Soldiers of The Salvation Army.
