This position is to fill full-time, permanent, safety-sensitive Detention Officer vacancies in the Department of Detention Facilities for Anne Arundel County Government.
For MPCTC certified Detention Officers, the starting salary may be up to $63,859, subject to approval and depending on experience.

- Stand, sit, and walk for prolonged periods of time.
- Respond to highly stressful, hostile, and dangerous situations, quickly addressing the situation and taking action to reduce danger and hostility.
- Subdue inmates engaged in physical altercations and control uncooperative individuals using oral and, when necessary, physical restraint.
- Respond to medical emergencies pending arrival of medical personnel; secure the scene and perform first aid.
- Operate a motor vehicle during day and night hours and in all weather conditions to transport inmates to court, medical appointments, hospitals, and work sites.
- Work overtime, shift work, and standby as necessary.
- Qualify, after training, with firearms (handgun and shotgun) and self‑defense skills.
- Complete written reports and use radio to communicate.
- Perform overt and casual observation of people, places, and things during day/night and all weather while working a post, supervising inmates off‑site, or transporting inmates.
- Hear and recognize sounds associated with emergency situations and respond appropriately.
- Perform related work as required.
- Ability to learn and apply correctional principles, practices, methods, technologies, and equipment in daily operational situations.
- Willingness to work under adverse and sometimes dangerous conditions, including unpleasant environments, day and night hours, and extended periods.
- Ability to operate motor vehicle and issued equipment after training.
- Ability to read, interpret, and enforce rules, regulations, written and oral instructions, or orders.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with superiors, other employees, the public, and inmates.
- Ability to prepare standard reports.
- Ability to meet established physical and age requirements.
- Ability to meet the selection standards of the County and the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
- Ability to successfully complete the Entry Level Training Program conducted by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Academy.
- Graduation from high school or GED.
- Minimum age of 18 at the time of appointment.
- Valid non‑commercial motor vehicle operator's license.
- Comprehensive background investigation, including medical and psychological evaluation.
- Positive controlled substance and alcohol testing; a negative marijuana test result is required prior to hire.
- For applicants with foreign education, documentation of accreditation and educational equivalency must be provided before the conclusion of the background investigation.
- This is a safety-sensitive position; employees are subject to controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and alcohol testing.
