Position OverviewUtilities Equipment Operators support the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s water distribution, sewer collection, stormwater, and fiber optic systems. The role is critical to public health, environmental protection, and reliable municipal services.
Positions are subject to on‑call duty, emergency call‑outs, and weekend/holiday work as service needs require.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperate medium and heavy equipment including backhoes, loaders, skid steers, dump trucks, compressors, saws, and related tools.
Perform excavation, back filling, surface restoration, and job site clean‑up.
Assist in maintenance and repair of water, sewer, storm drain, and fiber optic infrastructure.
Locate underground utilities and support safe excavation practices.
Support hydrant maintenance, system connections, and leak detection.
Respond to emergency and non‑emergency service calls.
Use mapping, mobile software, and work order systems to document and track work.
Maintain equipment and report mechanical or operational issues.
Follow all safety procedures and attend required safety and technical training.
Safety Sensitive and Essential PositionsEmployees must:
- Report to work as scheduled and remain on duty during emergencies.
- Work extended hours during severe weather or City emergency events.
- Be available for assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Participate in on‑call rotations.
- Pass required drug and alcohol testing for CDL‑regulated positions.
This work is performed primarily outdoors and employees will be exposed to:
- Heat, cold, rain, snow, and wet conditions.
- Loud noise from operating machinery.
- Odors in sewer system environments.
An entry‑level role for individuals beginning their career in utilities and heavy equipment operation. Employees develop technical skills while learning City systems, procedures, and safety standards.
Education Requirement: High school diploma or GED and related training or experience. No minimum years of equipment operation experience required.
Equipment Operator IIA skilled operator role for broader operational responsibility and occasional leadership of crew activities.
Additional Experience Requirement: Minimum of three (3) years of experience operating all relevant department equipment and vehicles, along with basic mechanical skills.
Equipment Operator I:
Starting at $17.7680 per hour, depending on experience.
Equipment Operator II:
Starting at $21.1100 per hour, depending on experience.
