This is a location-specific recruitment. Applicants must be willing to work in Cecil County to be considered. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) position/function only. All interested persons will need to re‑apply for any future recruitment conducted for this classification.
Nature of WorkThe Welder is responsible for performing journey‑level welding work at Cecil County area facilities and other facilities as requested. The employee may also provide additional support for carpentry, locksmithing, masonry, painting, plumbing and/or HVAC tasks with co‑workers as needed.
The duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs welding and metal fabrication tasks;
- Provides general maintenance on bridges to include replacement of back wall angle supports, finger joints, joint angles, bearing supports, anchor bolts, and seals;
- Assists in facility maintenance and repair of building structures to include plumbing, heating air conditioning, carpentry, ceiling and floor tiles, furniture and other systems;
- Performs small engine repair; and
- Works emergency essential weather events.
This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion performed outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDTA building. Employees may be required to move objects weighing over fifty pounds and may also be required to work on equipment located on high poles or other elevated locations, and/or perform their job in cramped quarters in buildings or underground.
Essential Employee StatusEmployees in this classification are considered essential employees and are subject to emergency call‑back procedures, twenty‑four hours a day, as may be required to maintain continuous operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shift work, to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Skilled Trade Specialist Supervisor or other designated supervisor. The current vacancy exists in Elkton, MD at the John
F. Kennedy Maintenance II facility.

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in welding.
