- Rotate through various departments and learn to assist with yard operations, sailboat rigging, painting, composite repairs, marine systems, and mechanical work.
- Prep surfaces: stripping, scuffing, sanding, masking and priming.
- Apply coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to interior and exterior surfaces, trim and fixtures.
- Unstep and step masts, assemble and disassemble spars, tune standing rigging, connect and troubleshoot mast lights and wiring, install booms, sails and running rigging.
- Prepare sailboats for safe sailing.
- Haul, block and launch boats.
- Assist with general boat maintenance and service: waxing, bottom painting, zinc replacement.
- Work closely with the Yard Foreman and assist crew members as needed.
- Inspect, maintain and repair boats of all kinds.
- Utilize diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment.
- Assist installing and testing sanitation and refrigeration systems, cabinetry, electrical systems, steering gear and accessories.
- Troubleshoot, test, repair, replace, remove and install vessel systems and components.
- Conduct thorough assessments prior to starting a job: acknowledge budgeted time, confirm system and component requiring service, source parts if required.
- Learn and apply knowledge of marine systems: electrical, plumbing & water systems (fresh, salt, waste), gas and diesel engines.
- Assign parts and purchases to the appropriate vessels/tickets.
- Available to work overtime when required.
- Other duties as assigned by Manager.
- Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required training; wear proper PPE.
- Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.
Physical Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Technical school training preferred.
- Ability to ascend and descend a ladder.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Basic boat handling skills preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
