Skilled Trades Specialist II
Introduction
The Maryland Military Department is looking for a candidate to fill the Skilled Trades Specialist II position. This position is Emergency Essential and will work on a compressed work schedule Tuesday-Friday, 6:30am-5pm.

Location of PositionThis position will travel between three different work locations.
- Adelphi Readiness Center - 2600 Powder Mill Rd, Adelphi, MD
- Laurel Readiness Center - 8601 Odell Rd, Laurel, MD
- White Oak Readiness Center - 12200 Cherry Hill Rd, Silver Spring, MD
This position provides journey‑level skilled trades support (plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, and welding) to maintain safe, code‑compliant, and fully operational Maryland National Guard facilities statewide. This role directly supports mission readiness by ensuring building systems operate reliably, preventative maintenance is performed on schedule, and emergent repairs are resolved swiftly to keep training and operations uninterrupted.
Position Duties- Complete all customer service requests and work orders.
- Perform advanced carpentry, masonry, plastering and finishing.
- Plan, estimate, and oversee large or complex maintenance projects.
- Coordinate with vendors and other trades.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, wiring diagrams, and equipment schematics.
- Conduct routine inspections and diagnostics on infrastructure systems.
- Ensure compliance with safety codes, environmental standards, and security procedures.
Education:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience:
Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding.
Note:
- Candidates may substitute additional years of experience for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher, as a non‑commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance management specialty codes in utility systems repair, on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 3 years of HVAC experience.
- At least 3 years of plumbing experience.
- At least 3 years of electrical experience.
- At least 3 years interpreting and working from blueprints, wiring diagrams, and equipment schematics.
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
Special RequirementsThis position will require the ability to pass a State & Federal background check to access military facilities within the state of Maryland and to obtain a CAC card. The ability to obtain and maintain this access to the facility and CAC card is a condition of employment for this position.
