Maintenance Worker, Utility Technician, Building Maintenance
Salary (July 2, 2026): $21.70 - $35.20 per hour.
This posting will be used to fill a Full-time, Permanent, Safety-sensitive, Utility Support Worker II position in the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Utility Operations in the Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Division.
Nature and Variety of WorkThe role involves manual labor and semi-skilled tasks for repair and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. The employee typically works as part of a crew, performing repair and various maintenance assignments, cutting and installing damaged pipes, operating motor vehicles and equipment, and testing, repairing, and inspecting system components. Work is physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting, operation of heavy equipment, and work in trenches and confined spaces.
The employee may be exposed to contagious diseases, work in all weather, and respond to emergencies outside scheduled hours. Performance is evaluated by a supervisor.
- Performs manual labor and semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of Water distribution and Wastewater Collection systems by manually digging and back filling trenches, constructing shoring, laying water pipes, cutting pipes to specific measurements, and connecting replacement pipes with specialized clamps and couplings.
- Drives a dump truck with a trailer that is used for hauling a backhoe to a work site, and operates a front-end loader.
- Operates, as instructed and trained, various types of mobile cleaning equipment (vactor truck, wash truck, rodder truck) to clean the wastewater collection infrastructure (main sewer lines and wet wells).
- Operates a variety of power equipment and hand tools to include chain saws, pipe saws, jackhammers, picks, shovels, and rakes.
- Operates valve testing equipment, exercises valves, and tests to determine operating condition. Operates vehicles and equipment during snow removal operations.
- Serves as a work leader of a crew as required.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Knowledge of the proper practices and procedures in the repair, maintenance, and testing of the Water distribution and Wastewater collections system.
- Knowledge in preparing trenches so that the work can be performed properly and in accordance with safety regulations and construction standards.
- Knowledge in the operation of vehicles, power equipment, tools, and testing devices used to operate Water and Wastewater facilities and structures.
- Knowledge of Water and Wastewater Air Release Valve repair and operation.
- Knowledge of water and wastewater hydraulics, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and building and ground maintenance and repair.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
- Ability to use a computer and apply relevant software applications.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and materials.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles and equipment safely.
- Ability to work in hazardous conditions.
Education: Graduation from high school.
Experience: One (1) or more years experience in repair, maintenance, and construction of water and wastewater systems.
Driver's License: A valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license.
NOTE:
Candidates that do not possess a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license will be required to obtain this license within six (6) months of employment. Candidates must possess at minimum a valid Non-Provisional Class C motor vehicle operator's license. In addition, candidates must obtain a CDL Learner's Permit within 45 days of hire to allow for adequate CDL training.
Candidates will be required to obtain a Medical Certificate as mandated by Federal Law for a CDL Learner's Permit.
NOTE:
The one (1) or more years experience in repair, maintenance and construction of water AND wastewater systems may be substituted with one (1) or more years experience for a total of two (2) or more years experience in repair, maintenance, and construction of water OR wastewater systems.

Longevity pay is available based on years of service.

This position is Safety-sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.
Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
- Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Experience working in confined spaces such as manholes, vaults, etc.
