School Social Worker I, Criminal Justice (Grade ASTD
16) – Juvenile Services Education Program – Alfred
D. Noyes Children’s Center, 9925 Blackwell Rd, Rockville, MD 20850 (Montgomery County). The position may require assignment to multiple sites to provide systemic support.
The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. The School Social Worker engages with students, staff, and families to help students and families make the best use of available opportunities and resources, and to fully develop each student’s individual potential. The incumbent maintains a presence in the school, provides professional support, and facilitates problem solving and conflict resolution.
Responsibilities- Assist teachers and families in alleviating adverse conditions to promote resiliency and academic success for at‑risk students.
- Help parents and school personnel utilize school and community resources so children can maximize their educational abilities.
- Support parental involvement with the school to create positive academic and social outcomes.
- Listen to and respect the feelings and sensitivities of students and parents from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Provide appropriate interventions to help students overcome social and emotional problems interfering with school adjustment and achievement.
- Ensure special education and related services for students with physical, mental, social, emotional, or other educational disabilities.
- Advocate for social justice and equal opportunity to enhance educational attainment for all students and families.
Education: Determined by the State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers.

Desired orPreferred Qualifications
- Hold or be eligible for School Social Worker Certification issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
- Previous experience with children and working with a special needs population.
- Experience with educational agencies and interdisciplinary teams.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills that enable effective communication and positive interactions with students.
- Licensed as a Graduate Social Worker (by or on June 30, 2018) or as a Master Social Worker (by or on July 1, 2018), Certified Social Worker or Certified Social Worker‑Clinical by the State Board of Social Work Examiners before appointment to a position in State service.
- Licensed motor vehicle operator in Maryland if required to operate a motor vehicle.
- Meet mandatory continuing education standards as determined by the hiring department.
- Complete an approved training program in group counseling techniques.
- Complete the Level I Counseling course certified by the Maryland AIDS Professional Education Center (if required).
- Qualify for and successfully complete the Entry Level Training Academy operated by the Police and Correctional Training Commissions.
