Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service is recruiting multiple seasonal contractual lifeguard positions for the upcoming 2026 season at Dans Mountain State Park. Contract duration will be approximately between Memorial Day and Labor Day, depending on specific need.

Lifeguard Series
  • Lifeguard Lake/Pool
  • Lifeguard Lead Lake/Pool
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be currently certified by a national agency in Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR, and pass a physical evaluation, swim test and written test (upload certificates). Candidates may be certified after applying. Employment is contingent upon certification three weeks prior to hire date.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • At least two (2) months of lifeguarding experience as indicated on application.
  • Preference for applicants certified as a Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or Water Safety Instructor (WSI).
  • In pool settings, preference for applicants certified as a Pool or Spa Operator by an entity approved by the Maryland Department of Health and the county in which work will be performed.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications

Employees may be assigned duties that require operation of a motor vehicle, UTV or golf cart. Employees assigned such duties must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in Maryland and five points or fewer on their current driving record. Provisional driver’s license will not be accepted.

Special Requirements

Applicants selected may undergo an employment background investigation, including reference check, education verification, driving record check (if required) and criminal history check including fingerprinting. Continuing employment will be contingent upon results.

Selection Process

Applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be considered. Provide complete accurate information on application. Report all education and experience related to essential functions of this position.

For education obtained outside the U.S., provide a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service prior to hire.

Benefits

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of premiums for medical and prescription coverage.

The State of Maryland will subsidize remaining 75%. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will pay full premium.

Leave may be granted at rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
