GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This is a part‑time position in the Police Department responsible for providing safety and assistance to pedestrians at official cross walks and other traffic areas in the City.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION- Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at such places as streets and schools
- Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary
- Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults
- Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards, using signs, flags, and hand signals
- Inform drivers of detour routes
- Learn the location and purpose of street traffic signs within assigned patrol areas
- Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets
- Discuss traffic routing plans and control point locations with superiors
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to work with others; some knowledge of laws and ordinances relating to traffic and pedestrian safety; average social and general intelligence; ability to get along well with others; good judgment; good powers of observation; good physical condition. Ability to read and write; fill out reports as requested; ability to operate motor vehicle; able to exercise sound judgment; basic knowledge of area to give directions;
knowledge of city code and transportation articles with regard to pedestrian crossing; ability to interact with the public, good penmanship; ability to manage their workload.
Some work experience and completion of a standard high school course; some customer service work experience; possession of a valid driver’s license; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
PHYSICAL ABILITYAbility to lift and/or move small objects; ability to withstand working outside in all extreme weather conditions. Able to walk or stand for extended periods, able to withstand extremes of weather.
VISUAL ABILITYSufficient to observe children, adults and vehicles, to observe traffic and safety violations taking place, to read and write reports, correspondence, etc.
HEARING ABILITYSufficient to understand radio transmissions and conversation with other individuals in person and over a telephone and/or radio.
SPEAKING ABILITYSufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and over the phone or radio. Freedom from mental disorders which would interfere with performance of duties as described.
