Para educator Special Education
Responsibilities- Assists in instruction of students with disabilities in mainstream, resource room, or center-based settings. Although duties vary due to age or level of disability, duties may include:
- Managing behavior (redirecting, calming, or removing a disruptive student from the classroom)
- Monitoring and recording student progress in instructional areas (academics, daily living skills, dressing, grooming, social skills, etc.)
- Managing physical needs (toileting, feeding, dressing, lifting, positioning, transporting students in wheelchairs, etc.)
Good communications, interpersonal and record‑keeping skills. Ability/desire to work with technology and computers. Ability to work cooperatively with students and staff. Ability to supervise students. Ability to take direction. Ability to maintain regular attendance, which includes completing an assigned day.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds. The role requires physical work, including toileting, feeding, self‑care procedures, implementing behavioral management programs, maintaining student data, and working with students who may display aggressive or inappropriate verbal or physical behavior. Must be physically present in the building.
Minimum QualificationsHigh School Diploma or equivalent. Personal Care Assistant certification required to be completed within 30 days of start date.
Candidates must have completed 60 semester / 90 quarter credits or obtained an associate degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited institution or have passed the Para Educator exam or Para Pro exam. Documentation will be required.
Rate of Pay$20.85/hour to $25.50/hour DOQ with K-12 experience
$22.00/hour to $26.65/hour with AA/AAS degree or 60 semester/90 quarter credits from a regionally accredited institution, DOQ with K-12 experience*
$22.85/hour to $27.50/hour with BA degree from a regionally accredited institution, DOQ with K-12 experience
Special Ed Paras serving Center based students and classrooms 50 percent or more of their time shall receive an additional $0.50 per hour.
Special Ed Paras at Two Rivers Transition Program shall receive an additional $1.00 per hour. Special Ed Paras at River Trail Learning Center shall receive an additional $1.50 per hour.
