Position: Assistant Fire Chief (FT)

Fire Department Assistant Chief

This full-time position is a senior-level officer responsible for managing various programs within the Fire Department with a primary focus on fire protection plan review, code enforcement, fire investigation, juvenile fire setter intervention, community fire safety programs, and other programs as assigned by the Fire Chief. Conducts research of code issues in coordination with the fire department and fire inspection staff.

This full-time position may also assist in managing the Fire Department Operations Division including personnel, emergency response, and the related training and safety programs. Provides incident command functions, and supervision of fire officers and firefighters at emergency scenes and in other work settings; and provides administrative and operations support and direction as assigned.

Summary of Duties

Supervision Received and Exercised

Work is performed independently with guidance and direction from the Fire Chief.

Coordination of all personnel assigned to assist in the accomplishment of essential functions.

Performs varying forms of supervision and work direction for paid-on-call firefighters and fire officers at emergency scenes and in other settings. Serves in the incident command structure at emergency scenes and/or in City's emergency operations center.

Essential Functions
  • Responds to emergency incidents as assigned and functions as a firefighter, being physically capable of completing the firefighter physical ability test on an ongoing basis.
  • Manages and evaluates personnel at the scene of emergencies and other settings.
  • Manages/conducts the review of fire protection system plans for new construction and alteration of existing buildings. Also reviews construction site plans for issues related to provision of fire protection.
  • Manages/coordinates the fire investigation function to include: conducting investigations, coordinating with other agencies, preparing reports, and maintaining data and files.
  • Manages the community fire safety education program to include: curriculum development, ordering materials, training personnel, scheduling programs, teaching programs, and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Research code issues when assigned and provide follow-up to the Fire Chief.
  • Proposes and prepares policies, procedures and ordinances as assigned by the Fire Chief.
  • Assists in preparing budget for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Under the direction of the Fire Chief, represents the City in development of fire codes on local, state, and national level.

    Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of:
    Operations, services, and activities of the Fire Department.

    Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws as they relate to fire and building codes, fire and arson investigation, and juvenile fire setter intervention.

    Current programs and practices concerning community fire safety education and injury prevention.

    Principles, practices and methods of comprehensive fire suppression, hazardous materials, emergency response, safety and injury prevention, and emergency medical services.

    Principles of incident command, supervision, training and performance evaluation. Pertinent, Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

    Fire Department policies and procedures.

    Ability to:
    Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Operate a computer and other office equipment. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Operate assigned vehicle Manage assigned projects and set appropriate priorities. Interpret and apply applicable Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations in assigned areas. Coordinate the work of personnel assigned to assist with required projects.
