Supervisor, Correctional Health Nursing

This position performs a variety of duties which include supporting and overseeing daily operations of Correctional Health Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in providing direct and indirect nursing care to meet the psychological, physical, and mental health needs of inmates.

This is a full-time, exempt, on-site position.

  • Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 37: $91,769.60 to $ annually ($44.12 to $61.75 per hour).

Work Location

  • This position will work at the Anoka County Jail, located at 325 Jackson Street, Anoka, MN 55303.
  • Expected work hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support and oversee daily operations of Correctional Health Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in providing direct and indirect nursing care to meet the psychological, physical, and mental health needs of inmates.
  • Provide direct supervision and leadership to correctional health nurses on the unit to ensure daily medical needs and staffing requirements are met.
  • Conduct trainings and in-services.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews and care coordination meetings.
  • Oversee and manage staff scheduling; accurately review and approve nursing hours.
  • Ensure accurate data gathering and patient records.
  • Monitor nursing care through direct observation and review of medication records, nursing notes, and other pertinent information.
  • Develop and implement unit service standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Remain current on program-related legislation, rules, regulations and impacts on services.
  • Develop performance measurement and quality improvement processes; provide ongoing quality improvement of care by participating in meetings with correctional staff, department administration, contracted agencies and vendors.
  • Collaborate with internal and external medical service providers.
  • Implement processes that ensure complete patient records and data collection.
  • Maintain infection prevention and control practices.
  • Assist in monitoring environmental safety, including sharps counts and hazardous materials handling.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in nursing or related field and three years (2,080 annual hours) of job-related experience.
  • Requires registration as a professional nurse in the state of Minnesota.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • One or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Prior work experience in correctional health, triage, primary care clinics, emergency room, or hospital setting.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Standard office environment, correctional and detention institutions, field offices, courtrooms, hospitals and schools, and various community settings depending on assignment.
  • Work activities may require contact with uncooperative, angry, and sometimes hostile clients depending on assignment.
  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness.
  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
  • Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, and handling/carrying medical equipment.
