Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree from an accredited college in Building Systems or related field and one (1) year of paid experience in a related field.
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to three (3) years of work experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver's license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Required Special Qualifications
  • Valid Minnesota Special Class Engineers License.
  • Valid Minnesota Second Class – C boiler license or higher within 2 years of hire.
  • Registration as an unlicensed power limited technician within 6 months of employment.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Licensed as a Minnesota power limited technician (PLT).
Nature of Work

Under general supervision, conducts general maintenance and repairs on County buildings and facilities, performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance on plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, HVAC systems and related equipment. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks related to building functions and structures including in secured areas. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.

Examples of Work
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks on building equipment and systems including secured areas such as the Adult Detention Center and Work Release Facility.
  • Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains life safety equipment and mechanical equipment. Replaces defective or faulty parts and fabricates and installs replacements parts and new equipment as needed.
  • Repairs, operates, monitors, and maintains Facilities Management Systems (FMS).
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing and plumbing fixtures throughout facilities.
  • Repairs and maintains low voltage electrical equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs low pressure steam systems.
  • Orders and maintains parts inventory.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. Diagnoses problems, selects appropriate tools, and makes corrective changes.
  • Performs routine welding operations in the repair of equipment.
  • Operates forklifts and personnel lifts as needed.
  • Repairs, maintains, and operates electronic and pneumatic temperature controls throughout facilities.
  • Mentors and trains new employees and interns.
  • Performs weeknights and weekend emergency call backs and checks of buildings and equipment when required.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned.
