Position OverviewWorking under the general supervision of the Principal, Director, and Assistant Director of Special Services, the Special Education Teacher is responsible for delivering high‑quality instruction in alignment with Ansonia Public Schools’ vision, mission, and educational philosophy in all subjects. The teacher will develop lesson plans, manage the classroom environment, continually assess students’ knowledge, needs, abilities, and progress, assume responsibility for the development of each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), and consult with necessary school personnel to provide appropriate modifications and accommodations as mandated by the IEP.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Demonstrates comprehensive and current knowledge of subject taught.
- Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development as it relates to the learning/teaching process.
- Demonstrates an awareness and respect for diversity of cultural backgrounds and lifestyles.
- Demonstrates commitment to and aligns performance and behavior with the mission, vision, and educational philosophy of Ansonia Public Schools.
- Identifies and sequences goals, objectives, strategies, and assessments to provide for individual differences.
- Plans and implements the elements of an effective lesson design and develops lesson plans incorporating technology and instructional aids appropriate for instruction.
- Aligns assessment with instructional objectives based on formative assessment.
- Monitors student progress and adjusts instruction based on student questions and performance.
- Communicates with students individually and collectively about their needs and progress.
- Maintains high expectations for student learning and behavior.
- Performs all duties with the highest level of professionalism.
- Maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment by consistently implementing routines, transitions, and procedures.
- Proficient and consistent with use of data to inform instruction.
- Develops and maintains systems for keeping group and individual records.
- Supervises instructional assistants relative to students on caseload.
- Collaborates with regular and related services staff and administrators.
- Establishes and maintains frequent, effective, and appropriate communication with parents of students.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Qualified candidates will hold CT certification in one of the following:
- Integrated Early Childhood/ Special Ed., Nursery K Elem., 1‑3.
- Special Education Pre‑K‑12
- Excellent teaming, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Experience and knowledge regarding specialized instruction as well as inclusive educational practices.
- Knowledge of IDEA, writing IEPs, and the PPT process.
- Experience using educational technology (e.g., Google Suite, Power School, Microsoft Suite, IEP programs such as Frontline).
- Demonstrated commitment to and responsibility for self‑growth, professional improvement, ongoing self‑reflection or self‑evaluation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of national, state, and local standards.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relation skills.
- Three years’ successful teaching experience in an urban setting preferred.
