The Court Services Division of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice provides administrative support to courts such as the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, Provincial Court, Small Claims Court, Probate Court, and Bankruptcy Court. The Justice Officer is the first point of contact for the public and clients of the court system, providing a broad range of administrative support and ensuring accurate record‑keeping and cash handling.
PrimaryAccountabilities
- Receive and respond to requests relating to all court matters by telephone, fax, and email.
- Accept, count, and deposit all monies paid to the court; prepare daily cash reports and bank deposits per departmental procedures.
- Process correspondence and documentation received electronically, by mail, fax, or other methods.
- Maintain court filing systems by entering data into automated and manual systems, filing and retrieving documents, and forwarding information to court officials as required.
- Manage records retention according to STAR and STOR policies, opening and closing files appropriately.
- Schedule court cases and monitor the court calendar of pending cases.
- Provide general administrative support services.
- Provide legal information to the public regarding court navigation, forms, and procedures.
Successful candidates will have one-year post‑secondary education plus three years of related experience (or an acceptable equivalent). Exposure to a legal environment is considered an asset.
- Proficient data entry skills and accurate keyboarding in a computerized environment.
- Ability to adapt to rapidly evolving technologies and procedures.
- Strong communication and customer‑service skills.
- Experience handling cash and debit/credit card transactions.
- Ability to deal effectively with the public in stressful, confrontational, and sensitive situations.
- Strong organizational, time‑management, and multi‑tasking abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail, confidentiality, and performance under pressure and deadlines.
Sound knowledge of the justice system and government services for referral is an asset. Bilingualism in English and French (oral and written) is also considered an asset.
Working Conditions- Relief employees fill gaps; hours may vary between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM depending on operational needs. Potential for travel, overtime, and disruptions to personal life.

Pay Grade: CL 21 Hourly |
Salary Range: $28.76 – $32.06 Hourly
