Position Summary

The Special Education Coordinator provides leadership, coordination, and supervision of special education programming at the building level. Working in partnership with building and district administrators, the Coordinator supports high-quality instruction, legal compliance, inclusive practices, and collaborative problem-solving to ensure student access and success. The position promotes alignment with IDEA, Illinois School Code, IEP compliance, and the District 117 Portrait of a Graduate.

Qualifications
  • Professional Educator License / LBS1
  • General Administrative endorsement or Type 75 license (preferred)
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in Special Education
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA, IEP processes, and Section 504
  • Experience supervising paraprofessionals and supporting special education curriculum
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Commitment to inclusive practices, student growth, and staff development.
Essential Functions
  • Provide direct supervision and evaluation of special education teachers, paraprofessionals, IEP Specialist, and psychologists, including observations, SLOs, midpoints, and summative evaluations.
  • Facilitate special education department meetings and contribute to late start and institute day planning.
  • Lead paraprofessional scheduling, supervision, and time‑off approvals.
  • Coordinate the special education master schedule to ensure IEP compliance; provide FTE projections to the Director of Student Services.
  • Approve staff timesheets and manage the building‑level special education budget, materials, and technology inventory.
  • Assist in personnel matters, including postings, interviews, and hiring recommendations for special education roles.
  • Support the implementation of special education curriculum and online instructional platforms.
  • Monitor the quality, compliance, and timeliness of IEPs and related documentation.
  • Serve as LEA representative at IEP/FIE meetings and assist with scheduling transition IEPs and 8th‑grade articulation meetings.
  • Oversee accommodations facilitators, testing coordination, and special education programmatic logistics (e.g., field trips, transportation, parent requests).
  • Support students and staff in implementing FBAs, BIPs, and other behavior support plans.
  • Serve as a liaison between the building and the district student services department.
  • Collaborate with building administrators to support students with disabilities in matters of behavior, academic support, and discipline.
  • Effectively communicate with parents and guardians about student progress, needs, and available supports.
  • Participate in MTSS teams, problem‑solving meetings, and administrative leadership teams.
  • Assist with district‑level initiatives, such as Parent University events, transition nights, and new student orientations.
  • Provide administrative support and supervision during building events (before/after school).
  • Maintain active involvement in special education leadership meetings.
  • Attend off‑site therapeutic meetings when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Principal or Director of Student Services.
Physical Requirements

The Special Education Coordinator must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, including during classroom observations, school walkthroughs, and professional development events. The role requires the ability to travel between school buildings and occasionally navigate stairs or large campus spaces. Occasional lifting and carrying of instructional materials or equipment, up to 20 to 30 pounds, may be required.

Manual dexterity and visual acuity are necessary for working with computers, instructional technology, and standard office tools. The position may involve long periods of screen time, meetings, and public presentations.

Work Environment

The Special Education Coordinator works primarily in a high school building environment and engages regularly with students, staff, families, and support personnel. Some evening or weekend responsibilities may occur in support of school or district events. The role requires adaptability, collaboration, and a strong commitment to serving students with diverse needs.
