School Nurse

The Certified School Nurse or Registered Nurse is the health professional in the school. She or he is charged with seeing to the health needs of the students and to the record-keeping and other health-related requirements of the school and the District.

• Illinois Registered Nurse license
• Baccalaureate Degree preferred
• CSN certification preferred
• Current CPR-AED certification
• Computer literacy
• Competency in the use of current medical technology
• Prior professional nursing experience, preferably pediatric, adolescent, community or mental health nursing, and health program management

Principal or other designated supervisor

This is a full time position following the Grass Lake School calendar; the work day will be determined according to the nurse’s assignment. Duties include the provision of a school health program and delivery of services to students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. Nursing care performed in accordance with the standards of professional school nurse practice, district and school policies and procedures, and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.

• 1. Administer a coordinated school health program.
• 2.Collect and analyze epidemiological and other school health information.
• 3.Assess the health and safety needs of the school environment; implement blood borne pathogens control and reinforce universal precautions.
• 4. Participate in maintaining school health records and promote compliance with health related regulations such as immunizations and school physicals as outlined in the Illinois School Code and by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
• 5.Participate in the development of health-related policies and procedures in compliance with state mandates/current health practices.
• 6. Perform Vision and Hearing Screenings. Training provided if not certified for these.

• 1. Provide direct nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff including nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation.
• 2. Administer medication and/or treatments in accordance with Grass Lake School District #36’s policy and procedures.
• 3. Maintain accurate medical records and documentation including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions. Develop individual health care plans for students requiring special nursing procedures during the school day. Complete a Health History for students having a case study evaluation and a Health History Update for those students having a three-year reevaluation.
• 4. Provide health information and counseling for students, parents, and staff.
• 5. Recommend modification of school programs for students who may require changes due to their medical status.
• 6. Make appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
• 7. Accompany students on mobility trips as indicated by their medical status or IEP.

• 1. Maintain an organized and efficient health services office.
• 2. Maintain communication with administrators, teachers, other staff, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet student health and needs.
• 3. Communicate with and act as a liaison between the home, school community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
• 4. Participate in staffings, case reviews, annual reviews and parent conferences. Attend faculty meetings.
• 5. Work with community agencies for effective use of their resources and facilities.
• 6. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the principal.

• 1. Participate as a member of professional nursing organizations and utilize continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fields.
• 2. Participate as an active member of the school community representing health/wellness.
