Description
The District is seeking to establish a hiring list for the position of Recruit Firefighter. Personnel are assigned a 56-hour workweek on the 48/96 schedule.
The successful candidate will be an individual with the ability to perform the physically and mentally demanding job of a Firefighter, demonstrate strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, have a willingness to learn and train, and adapt to necessary change. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the ability to interact with and serve both a multigenerational and diverse workforce and the public.
Employees currently work 48-hour shifts, followed by 96 hours off-duty; however, incumbents may be assigned to a 40-hour workweek. The SFMD reserves the right to adjust shifts, pay, benefits, and working conditions in accordance with business needs and SFMD Policies.

- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
- Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to start date
- Must be certified (and maintain certification) as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Certified Emergency Paramedic (Copies of current certifications, as well as a CPAT dated after 10/31/2025, MUST BE uploaded at time of application in order to be considered)
- Must not be on the Office of Inspector General (OIG) list of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE)
Under general supervision, perform responsible public safety work involving the protection of life and property. Respond to alarms and participate in preventing and extinguishing fires; respond to rescue calls; respond to medical incidents and render emergency and non-emergency care; perform ancillary community health care services; engage in fire code enforcement, public education, station, apparatus, and equipment maintenance activities; and perform related work as required.
Respond and assist in the mitigation of technical rescue and hazardous materials incidents.
The position is designated as Classified and is Non-exempt.
Once the Recruit successfully completes a regional academy, the wage will increase to the Firefighter wage of $57,714.69. Additionally, SFMD uses a wage scale for increases so there will be a 5% increase at the 6-month mark and another 5% increase at the one year mark and 5% increases each year thereafter, up to step 5, at which time the top of the range will be reached.
