(Anticipated Hiring Range: $20.14) hourly

Must be available to attend training Friday mornings between June and August. Requires a flexible schedule May-August with some hours for training in March and April. This position will be assigned to work many weekends and/or evenings.

Positions assigned to this class oversee and manage the planning, coordinating, and operation of various aquatics programs, training, and safety. Provides general directions for the assistant pool manager and other lower-level aquatics staff. The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essentials duties may not change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the city's needs.

  • Manage and oversee aquatic activities at the swimming pool, including learn-to-swim lessons, special events, reservations, open swim, swim team and fitness programs.
  • Schedule staff, rotations, and attend required training.
  • Oversee and conduct inspections of aquatic areas, facilities, and equipment to ensure the safety of patrons and visitors.
  • Oversee and enforce compliance with all pool rules and regulations.
  • Oversee and administer lifesaving techniques and first aid.
  • Manage and oversee pool counts, chemical checks, cleaning, and customer service.
  • Prepare and distribute various reports on operations and activities to upper management.
  • Ensure the safety of patrons and staff and promptly respond to and document incidents as they occur.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with staff, parents, patrons, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Manage and oversee in-staff training sessions and lifesaving techniques and drills.
  • Manage and authorize access to programs, facilities, and services.
  • Support the city’s policies, procedures, goals, and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives while ensuring compliance with all safety procedures.
Education and Experience

Must possess a high school diploma or GED and three (3) seasons of experience as a lifeguard that includes one (1) year as a swim instructor or related field and two (2) years of supervision.

Prior to appointment, must possess:

  • Lifeguard, Waterpark, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and Water Safety Instructor certifications from a professionally recognized provider such as American Red Cross, Ellis or Starfish.
Knowledge
  • City and department policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Uses and intended purposes of aquatics equipment, including lifesaving devices.
  • Pool safety operations, services, and activities related to aquatic programs and lifeguarding.
  • Principles and practices of management, leadership, and training.
Skills
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, patrons, and volunteers during the course of work.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely while following instructions.
  • Apply lifesaving techniques and render first aid to patrons of all ages.
  • Interact tactfully and courteously with pool patrons and visitors.
  • React to emergency situations in a quick but calm manner.
Pre-employment Requirements

Candidates who are selected for appointment may be required to be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Arizona or meet the transportation needs of the position.

Physical

Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed in outside weather conditions with high exposure to the sun. Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, run, and climb. Required to demonstrate the ability to swim a continuous 300 yards while performing the breaststroke, backstroke, sidestroke and freestyle; tread water for two minutes using legs and feet only. Must be able to dive into twelve (12) feet of water and retrieve a 10-pound weight;

swim 25 yards in 25 seconds with a rescue tube underneath body doing approach or breaststroke and demonstrate rescue techniques and skills. Vision abilities required by this job include close perception, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Regularly required to reach with hands and arms, and to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools and equipment.

May work a flexible schedule which includes nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours.
