This position begins early June and runs through mid-August. Hours are limited to 40 hours per week and range from Monday - Friday between 7am and 6pm.
POSTING CLOSING DATE:

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
The Inclusion Counselor is responsible for providing additional support to campers with disabilities (ages 5-12) during Summer Camps. This role will focus on ensuring campers with disabilities have a positive and inclusive experience by offering tailored accommodations, lowering the camper-to-staff ratio, and providing individualized support to help them thrive in the camp environment. Inclusion counselors do not provide 1:1 support and should engage with the group as a whole while simultaneously supporting specific campers that may require additional support.
Inclusion counselors are also expected to actively participate in active/passive games, arts and crafts, food experiences, outdoor activities, and more alongside traditional camp counselors and instructors.
This position is supervised by a full-time Recreation Program Specialist.
This position begins on June 8, 2026 and runs through mid-August. Hours are limited to 40/week and range Monday through Friday between 7am and 6pm.
Inclusion Counselors are expected to be available for 6 of the 7 weeks of summer camp.
A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:
* Support Multiple Sites:
Camps occur at several different sites: the Community Center, Cultural Arts Center, and Athletic Fields. This position may require you to travel between camp locations to assist with certain camps as needed. It is expected that the majority of this position's duties will take place at the Community Center.
* Camp Counselor Duties:
Attend off-site field trips, lead games, and facilitate other camp activities alongside other camp counselors. Actively participate in all camp programming.
* Assist Instructors:
In select specialty camps, you will support instructors rather than other camp counselors. Actively participate in specialty camps by supporting instructors and participants.
* Provide Direct Support:
Work with campers who have disabilities, offering extra support and supervision as needed.
* Lower Camper-to-Staff Ratio:
Adjust the camper-to-staff ratio for specific activities or group settings to ensure that campers with disabilities receive the attention they need to engage fully in the camp experience.
* Behavior Management:
Assist in implementing behavior management strategies tailored to each camper's needs, promoting positive behavior and addressing challenges as they arise.
* Provide Accommodations:
Modify camp activities and environments as necessary to ensure that all campers can fully participate, based on their individual needs and abilities. This may include adapting physical activities, ensuring accessibility, or providing sensory accommodations.
* Collaboration with Camp Staff:
Work closely with other counselors, program staff, and the Camp Directors to create a supportive, inclusive environment for all campers. Share observations and insights about campers needed to ensure that everyone is included.
* Promote Inclusion:
Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where all campers feel valued and respected, encouraging interaction between campers with and without disabilities.
* Monitor Camper Progress:
Track and report on the progress of campers with disabilities, identifying areas where additional support may be needed. Provide feedback and suggestions for improving inclusion strategies.
* Ensure Safety and Well-being:
Maintain a safe and supportive environment by following all safety protocols, supervising campers at all times, and addressing any physical or emotional concerns promptly.
* Attend Training:
Participate in pre-camp training sessions and stay informed about best practices for working with campers with disabilities.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
Experience working in a camp or recreational setting with children ages 5-12.
Coursework in recreational therapy is a plus!
First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain during training week of June 15th).
