Position Overview
- The Assistant Project Manager supports the Project Manager in planning, coordinating, and executing heavy civil construction projects in the $10–30 million range, with a focus on schedule, cost, quality, and safety performance.
- This position bridges field and office operations by managing project documentation, tracking quantities and costs, and coordinating subcontractors, suppliers, and internal resources to ensure projects are delivered in accordance with contract requirements and company standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering preferred.
- 3–5 years of experience in construction management or project engineering on civil infrastructure, commercial, industrial, or residential subdivision projects.
Skills And Abilities
- Working knowledge of contract administration, project planning and scheduling, and project cost tracking and reporting.
- Ability to read and interpret civil engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents; capable of identifying discrepancies and coordinating resolution with the project team.
- Proficiency in project management and construction software (scheduling and job cost systems) and strong Excel skills for quantity takeoffs, tracking, and analysis.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and stakeholders in a field‑driven environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, subcontractors, suppliers, and owners.
- Demonstrated problem‑solving ability, sound judgment, and a high level of initiative and follow‑through.
- Assist the Project Manager with overall project planning, including development and updating of the project schedule, sequencing of work, and coordination of subcontractors and suppliers.
- Support project start‑up activities, including submittal logs, RFIs, permits, preconstruction meetings, and initial project cost and schedule setup.
- Perform quantity takeoffs from drawings and specifications, support estimates for change orders, and help forecast labor, equipment, and material needs.
- Track and report installed quantities and percent complete to support production analysis, billings, and project cost reports.
- Assist with administration of contracts and subcontracts, including preparing and routing subcontracts, POs, change orders, and related documentation for approval.
- Prepare, log, and track RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and other project correspondence, ensuring timely responses and distribution to field personnel.
- Help assemble monthly owner pay applications and support review of subcontractor and vendor pay applications for accuracy, quantities, and contractual compliance.
- Participate in project cost and revenue tracking by entering data into the job cost system, reviewing cost reports with the Project Manager, and assisting with cash‑flow planning.
- Support field operations by coordinating material deliveries, reviewing drawings with field leaders, confirming layout and quantities, and helping resolve day‑to‑day issues.
- Assist with schedule updates, look‑ahead planning, and progress reporting, including preparation of meeting agendas, minutes, and action item logs.
- Maintain organized electronic and hard‑copy project files, including daily reports, photos, safety documentation, testing reports, and as‑built information.
- Help maintain positive relationships with owners, engineers, inspectors, and the public, representing the company professionally and supporting the Project Manager in client communications.
- Contribute to project close‑out by assisting with punch list tracking, as‑built drawings, O&M manuals, final quantities, and close‑out documentation.
