What you will be doingAn employee in this class inspects residential and commercial construction and installation work in progress to enforce state codes for buildings construction and installation including the four trade areas of building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical codes; inspections also include inspection for provisions required by Planning regulations. Work involves frequent field checks in the town to inspect construction work in various stages of completion.
Technical judgment is required to interpret provisions of the codes as applied to practical construction projects and circumstances. The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and extremely hot and cold temperatures. Work is also subject to noise and dust. Tact, courtesy, and firmness must be exercised in dealing with contractors and the general public. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Code Enforcement Supervisor and is evaluated through observation, review of reports and records, and contractor and citizen reactions.

An incumbent in this position may be designated as a Building Code Official Apprentice, Building Official I, II, or III dependent upon the qualification experience and knowledge of the selected applicant.

- Notifies responsible parties of defects and re-inspects to determine if corrective actions have been taken; issues stop orders if necessary.
- Maintains records of inspections and prepares necessary reports.
- Completes daily log reports – Level I, II, and III only.
- Develops and maintains positive working relationship with citizens, builders, developers and town officials.
- Reads site plans, blueprints, and specifications to ensure one- and two-family dwellings and townhouse plans are compliant with state building codes and local ordinances.
- Inspects single-family dwelling and townhome construction for compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes and planning requirements.
- Explains results to homeowners following completion of inspection, either on site or when contacted by the homeowner.
- Inspects building construction for compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes and planning requirements; inspections may include both residential and larger commercial and/or industrial and multi‑story buildings.
- Recommends judicial actions and may be required to testify in court against violators of the State building code.
- Issue stop work orders and orders to comply.
- Explains results to homeowners and business owners following completion of inspection, either on site or when contacted by the owner or builder.
- Reads and reviews site plans, blueprints, and specifications to ensure one and two family, townhouses and commercial plans are compliant with state building codes and local ordinances.
- May be assigned to assist in training and orienting new employees.
- Assists in training other inspectors.
