Minimum Qualifications LOCATION OF (1) POSITION TO BE FILLED: DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and experience equivalent to one year of full-time work in a state of federal adult correctional facility.

Substitution of Experience for

Education:

Qualifying state or federal adult correctional institution experience may substitute for the required education to a maximum of four years (e.g., experience equivalent to one year of full-time work in a state or federal adult correctional facility may substitute for one year of the required education).

Other Requirements Necessary Special

Qualifications:
  • Have a good moral character, as determined by investigation.
  • Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority.
  • Agree to release all records involving their criminal history by the appointing authority.
  • Supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint-based criminal history records check.
  • Submit to and pass a pre-employment screening test for illegal drugs.
  • Upon appointment, successfully complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy.

Job Overview

Summary:

Under general supervision, performs compliance monitoring work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features:

An employee in this class monitors the performance of employees in all operational areas at a correctional institution and their compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Work involves receiving, interpreting, and distributing new departmental policies and directives, conducting on‑site audits of operational areas, and serving on institutional boards and committees.

Competencies (KSA's)
  • Monitors the activities and programs in a Tennessee correctional institution to ensure accreditation requirements are met: ensures the enforcement of the standards for all accrediting agencies; reviews logs, reports, or other required documents for accuracy, completeness, and maintenance according to standards. Reviews incident, status, inspection, and other reports to ensure deficiencies or irregularities are identified, have a plan for correction, or have been corrected;

    inspects the physical environment within the facility to ensure compliance with safety, and operational and program standards; documents incidents of non‑compliance to maintain historical records for audit purposes; collaborates with supervisors to develop and implement corrective action plans for deficiencies that have been identified; conducts semi‑annual audits of programs and operations of correctional facilities to ensure accreditation/certification requirements are being met;

    discusses specific compliance requirements with staff; prepares reports to management that summarize findings in order to inform officials of the results of inspections.
  • Assists management is developing and implementing departmental or institutional policies: disseminates policy information to staff on the processes and procedures affected by policy; discusses specific situations to ensure employees are applying the appropriate policy to a given work area; compares drafts or new or modified policies with American Correctional Association (ACA) standards to ensure compliance; prepares institutional responses to policy drafts for submission to the Central Office;

    reviews new policy to identify necessary changes in institutional processes or procedures; submits to the warden modifications of the approved policies/procedures for administrators and affected supervisors to implement in their areas of responsibilities; observes activities and reviews files to ensure changes are being carried out according to regulations and standards.
