Special Education Paraprofessional – Highland Park Elementary School
Salary:
Starting hourly rate $18.97 – $21.97, depending on experience ($1.00 increase for BA/BS).
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Good command of the English language.
- Ability to work well with students and staff.
- Working knowledge and competence in reading, math, English, and related academic subjects.
- Typing and computer skills preferred.
- Highly qualified (associate’s degree OR pass the Para Pro exam) – This is for Title-1 Paraprofessional positions ONLY!
Building principal and/or classroom teacher.
Job GoalTo assist the teaching staff in supporting the learning programs for students with disabilities in their designated educational environment.
Performance Responsibilities- Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material, specially designed instruction, or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
- Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
- Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
- Assists with such large group activities as needed by the special education teacher and teacher.
- Supports academic instruction, including reading, writing, math, and participates in other forms of verbal, non-verbal, and visual communication with students.
- Monitors progress and provides documentation to the special education teacher, also assists with testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
- Maintains a high level of ethical behaviour and confidentiality of information concerning school matters.
- Work directly under the supervision of a special education teacher.
- Supports students with self-help/self-care needs if necessary.
- Other duties as assigned based on the student’s needs.
- Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) – Annual Training
- Other training as determined necessary based on specific disabilities of students served.
- Lower body strength to stand and walk throughout the work day.
- Upper body strength ability to lift students for positioning in wheelchairs, side lyers, or floor mats. (Back support provided if needed.)
Employment relationship with the District is at will and of indefinite duration. Salary and fringe benefits to be set by the Board of Trustees.
