Position Summary

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, specially designed instruction and case management for students with disabilities. This role involves ensuring students receive a Free Appropriate Public Education in the Least Restrictive Environment by delivering differentiated instruction, managing IEPs, and fostering a structured, engaging classroom environment. The teacher collaborates with colleagues, families, and administrators to support the academic and personal growth of every learner.

Qualifications
  • Required:

    Valid Wisconsin DPI teaching license appropriate for the assigned subject/grade level and Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
  • Preferred:
    Prior teaching experience in the assigned subject/grade level and familiarity with technology integration and various instructional strategies.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • IEP Development & Case Management
    • Serve as the IEP Case Manager for an assigned caseload, ensuring all timelines for initial evaluations, annual reviews, and three-year re-evaluations are met.
    • Draft and implement student-centered, College and Career Ready IEPs that focus on high expectations.
    • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with District policies and state/federal laws.
  • Instructional Delivery & Classroom Management
    • Provide differentiated instruction across various models, including co-teaching, inclusion, pull-out, and self-contained settings.
    • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with District and state standards, adapting and modifying the general education curriculum to meet unique learner needs.
    • Create and maintain a structured, engaging classroom environment that supports learning and sets clear behavioral expectations.
  • Assessment & Data
    • Administer and interpret formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress toward IEP goals.
    • Use data to drive instructional decisions and provide regular progress reports to parents and families.
  • Behavioral Support
    • Conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments and develop Behavior Intervention Plans.
    • Maintain training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention to handle student behaviors requiring de-escalation.
  • Collaboration & Professionalism
    • Work with general education teachers, therapists (OT/PT/Speech), parents and administration to support student success.
    • Supervise and provide daily guidance to special education paraprofessionals.
    • Attend required staff meetings, participate in professional learning communities, and stay current with best practices in teaching.

    • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
    • Occasional lifting, carrying, or pushing of materials and classroom equipment.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in person, via phone, and through electronic means.
    • Work primarily in a classroom setting, with occasional outdoor supervision and off-site activities.
Terms of Employment
  • Contract Length: 192 days per school year.
  • Evaluation:
    Performance evaluations will be conducted by the Building Principal or Associate Principal in accordance with Hudson School District Board of Education policies.
