Volunteer Math Tutor

The City of Appleton is launching a new program called Homework Hub:
Math Edition in Fall 2026 at Appleton Public Library. This program aims to help teens build confidence and skills in mathematics. Math tutoring volunteers will provide after-school homework assistance to teens in grades 6-12 with a special focus on arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. APL offers free access to space, computers with internet access, wi-fi, and digital resources.

Examples of Duties

Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Provide 1:1 assistance to middle school and high school teens looking to strengthen or build their math skills.
  • Help students understand math homework and assignments.
  • Break down complex concepts into simple, easy-to-follow steps.
  • Offer helpful study tips when appropriate.
  • Refer students to free academic online resources when possible.
Typical Qualifications

Qualifications and Commitment:

  • Passionate about helping teens in our community.
  • Proficient in basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
  • Previous or current teaching, tutoring or work experience using math is desirable but not required.
  • Build and maintain a patient, encouraging, and positive learning environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, approachable attitude.
  • Predictable attendance; able to commit to 2 hours a week on Wednesdays from 4pm-6pm during the school term.
  • A designated study space and materials to help support volunteers will be provided.
