Automation Engineer II/Sr.

As an Automation Engineer II/Sr. for the Machine Development Center (MDC) with Greenheck Group, you will design, program, assemble, and install electrical controls used in machines and tooling systems. Support the Automation and Controls team with their projects, as well as providing post machine installation troubleshooting and support. Responsible for intermediate‑advanced programming of HMI, PLC, Robot, and Vision.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING 60% of the time
  • Manage medium sized machine installations including specifying power requirements and locations, requesting network connections and configurations, disconnecting and reconnecting machines at MDC and final location, coordinating tasks with IT, maintenance, mechanical designers, etc., training maintenance personnel and automation and controls technicians, participating in preventative maintenance events, and traveling to Greenheck locations to complete machine installs, often on short notice.
25% of the time
  • Create electrical schematics and cabinet layout using AutoCAD electrical.
  • Write PLC/HMI/Robot programs using over 50 manufacturer software packages; programs range from medium complexity coordinated motion programs to simple machine control.
  • Build and wire electrical panels.
10% of the time
  • Use manufacturer’s software to develop BOMs.
  • Travel to Greenheck facilities to install or repair machines and train personnel.
  • Perform design calculations for component sizing, overload protection, motor sizing, wire sizing, and circuit sizing.
  • Draw sheet metal parts with AutoCAD.
  • Collaborate with application engineers at external control manufacturers for advanced programming solutions.
  • Stay current with NEC standards and related documents (CUL, CSA, UL, NFPA 70e, IEC) to support all Greenheck CNC machines and robots.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting services on CNC machines.
  • Contact control manufacturers when necessary.
  • Write robot programs for new products.
  • Work with business units to create and modify programs that improve robotic welding and CNC efficiency, operator friendliness, and parts traceability.
  • Support machines built by outside manufacturers and integrate purchased machines into MDC or other purchased machines.
  • Investigate and install monitoring equipment on purchased machines and modify them to comply with company safety standards.
5% of the time
  • Develop electrical parts list, order parts, and wire external machine components to cabinet.
  • Design medium‑complexity machine guarding strategies that comply with OSHA and ANSI standards.
  • Work with IT application developers on program integrations and code machines for SAP integration.
  • Power up, troubleshoot, and commission machine to production readiness.
  • Integrate hydraulic and pneumatic systems into machine electrical control.
  • Provide post‑installation troubleshooting support.
  • Support product development engineers with new products and field problems, and interpret NEC violations flagged by field inspectors.
  • Assist with specifying electrical components for Greenheck products and support automation and controls technicians with their projects.
