Fractional CFO, CFO Services position with Law Firm Velocity
Most CFOs spend their careers being the person who says no. This isn’t that job.
Ready to join something exciting? Law Firm Velocity is crushing it as one of the top law firm CFO and bookkeeping firms in the US. We have built our reputation on being the absolute best at what we do: turning financial complexity into crystal-clear insights that help law firms thrive.
We’re adding a Fractional CFO to our CFO Services team. We’re looking for someone who has actually sat in the seat and has run finances for a real business and pushed revenue, margins and cash alongside the firm CEO.
Position SummaryLaw Firm Velocity’s CFO Services team provides fractional CFO services to law firms across the country. As a Fractional CFO, you’ll be the primary strategic finance leader for a portfolio of law firm clients—the person the owner calls before they sign the lease, hire the associate, or draw on the line of credit.
What this role is: Advisory. We partner with law firm owners and their teams to drive the numbers that decide whether they can make payroll, whether the bank says yes, whether they can afford the next hire, and whether the firm grows or just gets busier. Your primary tools are running finance meetings that drive firm goals and action items along with models build in a dedicated FP&A tool.
What this role is not: Not tax prep. Not bookkeeping. Not closing the books—our bookkeeping team and Financial Analysts handle that, so your time goes to the work only a CFO can do.
This is not a passive role. The CFOs who thrive here can read a realization report, spot the problem in the trust reconciliation, and then explain both to a managing partner in plain English—someone who went to law school, not business school, and would rather be in a courtroom than a spreadsheet.
You’ll earn trust fast with owners who have run their firm for 20 years and have heard plenty of advice already. You’ll translate numbers into action, so every client meeting ends with decisions, not just a review of last month. And you’ll treat finance as something that drives the firm, not just reports on it.
What You’ll Do- Serve as the primary fractional CFO for a portfolio of law firm clients, owning each relationship end-to-end: expectation-setting, recurring advisory meetings, and ongoing communication.
- Lead monthly and quarterly financial review meetings with firm owners—what happened, what it means, and what to do about it.
- Guide clients through the decisions that shape the firm: partner compensation, associate and staff hiring, pricing and fee structures, office leases, lines of credit and financing, and growth investments.
- Build and own the cash flow forecasts, budgets, and financial models each firm uses to make decisions—tools they actually run the business on, not reports they glance at once a quarter.
- Analyze law-firm-specific KPIs—realization, utilization, collection rates, revenue per timekeeper, origination, WIP and AR aging, and trust account activity—and turn them into clear, prioritized action.
- Surface risks and opportunities before the owner sees them: cash crunches, margin erosion, billing leaks, and staffing imbalances.
- Hold clients accountable to the plan. When they get stuck, you help them take the next step.
- Direct the Financial Analysts supporting your clients—set priorities, review their work, and mentor them toward their own CFO seat.
- Collaborate with our bookkeeping team to keep client financials accurate, timely, and decision-ready.
- Contribute to how we deliver CFO services—sharpening our models, meeting cadences, and reporting so the whole team gets better.
You’ve sat in the CFO seat. You’ve run finance for a real business and you know what it…
