This position supports the City’s Community Development Department and its 3 divisions – Assessors, Inspections, and Planning & Development. Work involves assisting with property maintenance and zoning compliance, supporting permitting and development review processes, responding to resident inquiries and complaints, maintaining accurate records and documentation, and researching and providing technical support for special projects.
For the 2026 Summer season, activities will focus on activities for the Inspections Division, to include site inspections and managing weed/grass cutting code cases. Misc. projects for the Planning & Development; and Assessors Division are anticipated on an ad hoc basis. Work will be in person.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Performs property data verification and assists with field checks, record updates, and other functions in coordination with the Assessor’s Office to maintain current and reliable property information.
- Maintains databases, files, and permit or property record tracking systems to ensure data integrity and accessibility.
- Conducts field inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and approved site plans, and to support accurate property assessment records.
- Investigates and documents complaints or concerns related to property maintenance, zoning, and neighborhood conditions.
- Communicates effectively with property owners, tenants, contractors, and members of the public to explain regulations, resolve issues, and promote voluntary compliance.
- Reviews and processes a variety of permit applications (e.g., fences, signs, sheds, and small projects) and assists with other community development or property assessment activities as assigned.
- Prepares correspondence, inspection reports, and notices of non-compliance in accordance with established procedures and standards.
- Coordinates with other City departments and external agencies to address cross-departmental issues related to property maintenance, community development, and assessment accuracy.
- Supports public communication and outreach efforts related to planning and community development projects, including preparation of materials, attendance at public meetings, and field coordination as needed.
- Maintains regular, punctual, and predictable attendance and performs duties in a professional and courteous manner.
- Assists with research, data collection, and reporting to support community development initiatives and property assessment programs.
- Participates in special projects or field surveys related to neighborhood improvement, redevelopment, or verification of property records.
- General knowledge of or ability to quickly learn property maintenance, zoning, and building codes, as well as basic assessment principles.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments effectively.
- Skill in interpreting and applying municipal codes, regulations, and procedures.
- Proficiency with computers and standard office software applications; ability to learn specialized databases, GIS/mapping, or assessment programs.
- Ability to communicate clearly, tactfully, and professionally with the public and coworkers.
- Ability to investigate complaints, document findings, and prepare accurate written reports.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in the field and office settings.
- Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin driver's license.
