Job Description:
We have an exciting opportunity to join the Anatomic Pathology team!
A 0.8 FTE Clinical Laboratory Specialist position is open.
This team member will learn two AP prep team roles: cytology, histology, TCN campus pathology support and/or AP Sendouts support.
Start times vary based on the role for the day they include 0530, 0730, 0800 and 0830. This position is M-F with an every 5th weekend and holiday on call rotation for bone marrow support. Team members in this role will work at the TCA and TCN campus.
Key Accountabilities:
- Performs complex processes including collecting bone marrow, performing and staining pathology frozen specimens, performing EKGs, processing and resulting send outs, and resulting moderately complex testing.
- Obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients following proper identification protocols and appropriate techniques to maintain the integrity of the specimens and prioritizes collections to meet established turnaround times.
- Supports patient testing by performing waived testing, loading analyzers, and performing lab functions, as needed, to meet patient demands.
- Adheres to OSHA and Theda Care department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment.
- Provides training for new lab and non-lab team members to retain top talent.
- Performs specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed including entering physician's orders, processing cancelations, and entering add-on tests to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Enters, activates, and/or reviews physician's order in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality.
- Maintains supplies and assists with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities.
- Performs special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED preferred
• Must be 18 years of age - Two years of laboratory experience and Associate's degree or four years of equivalent experience in progressive complexity of responsibility in a laboratory.
- Completion of BLS Certification will be required for candidates working at Theda Care Medical Center – Wild Rose
Physical Demands:
- Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
- Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
Work Environment:
- Works in a medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials
- Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments
- Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock
- Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients
- Use of computers throughout the work day
- Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers
