Job Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Specialist performs complex pre‑analytic, analytic, and post‑analytic processes, and may perform specimen collection.
Used to be a key member of the Anatomic Pathology team, covering cytology, histology, TCN campus pathology support, and/or AP Sendouts support. This 0.8 FTE position involves bone marrow support on a Monday‑Friday basis with an every‑fifth‑weekend and holiday on‑call rotation.
Key Accountabilities- Performs complex processes including collecting bone marrow, performing and staining pathology frozen specimens, conducting EKGs, processing and resulting send‑outs, and performing moderately complex testing.
- Obtain specimens from inpatients and outpatients, following proper identification protocols and appropriate techniques to maintain specimen integrity and prioritise collections to meet established turnaround times.
- Support patient testing by performing waived tests, loading analyzers, and performing laboratory functions as needed to meet patient demands.
- Adhere to OSHA and Theda Care department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment.
- Provide training for new laboratory and non‑laboratory team members.
- Perform specimen‑related computer functions with speed and accuracy, including entering physician orders, processing cancellations, and adding tests to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Enter, activate, or review physician orders in the system to maintain patient safety and quality.
- Maintain supplies and assist with inventory and ordering to keep supplies available for patient care responsibilities.
- Perform special specimen collections (e.g., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow‑up as required by law.
- High School diploma or GED preferred.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Two years of laboratory experience and an Associate’s degree, or four years of equivalent experience in progressively responsible laboratory work.
- Completion of BLS Certification required for candidates working at Theda Care Medical Center – Wild Rose.
Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to twenty‑five (25) pounds without assistance. Job classification is exposed to blood‑borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing duties.
Work EnvironmentMedical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and bodily fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials. Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments, occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. Occasional contact with aggressive or combative patients. Use of computers throughout the workday; frequent repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers.
