The Medical Assistant (MA) functions within the administration pre-defined scope of practice guidelines per state location of practice. The MA in the ambulatory care setting collects subjective and objective health status data from the patient or caregiver and communicates this data to the health care provider. The MA participates in the care of patients by providing contributing data to licensed health care professionals and following through on the patient’s plan of care under the direction of the provider.
The MA communicates the provider’s written instructions for care to the patient or caregiver, and performs a variety of duties under the direct supervision of a person licensed to practice medicine. Specialized clinical duties include, but are not limited to, obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, observing and reporting patient signs or symptoms, and performing point of care testing.
Education & Experience (Minimum Required)
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant program
- Documented successful completion of the following courses or their recognized equivalents:
- Medical Terminology from an accredited institution or completed online through Universal Class
- Anatomy & Physiology or Body Structure & Function or Human Body in Health & Disease from an accredited institution or completed online through Universal Class
- Pharmacology from an accredited institution
- Two years of Medical Assistant‑related work experience with completion of the required educational courses within the first 12 months of hire
- Experience in a healthcare setting
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.
Preferred / OptionalBasic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.
Additional Program Requirements (Ambulatory MA)- Graduate of a recognized Medical Assistant program
- Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred
- Nationally certified or registered as a Medical Assistant (MA) (e.g., CMA, CCMA, CMAC, NCMA, RMA)
- For North Dakota: registration as an MAIII through the ND Board of Nursing; if not already held, the MA will have 4 months to obtain registration and must be registered on the ND Board of Nursing UAP Registry if no MAIII registration ication administration prior to registration must be supervised by a licensed nurse. MAs in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, and Oregon do not require state registration.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of employment. Re‑certification as required.
