Position Summary
Senior Underwriter (Specialty) – Medical Professional Liability – Midwest Region (remote within the Midwest states). Responsible for evaluating and writing insurance risks for hospitals and related facilities, using underwriting authority to maintain a profitable book of business and mentoring junior underwriters.
Responsibilities- Underwrite new and renewal submissions (primary focus on manual and experience‑rated accounts).
- Develop and maintain relationships with brokers and other channel partners.
- Identify program risks, process improvement opportunities, and claims trends.
- Collaborate with Actuarial, Claims, and Risk teams to establish terms and conditions based on underwriting guidelines and program rates.
- Monitor, analyze, and report on the quantity and quality of the assigned book of business.
- Assist in financial results management, including revenue budgeting, loss ratio targets, and performance reporting.
- Participate in innovation and product development initiatives to keep products relevant to evolving risks.
- Perform additional duties as required.
- Bachelor’s degree; preference for studies in insurance, risk management, business administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years medical professional liability underwriting experience, with at least 4 years in specialty underwriting.
- Experience underwriting hospital accounts and evaluating manual and experience‑rated submissions.
- Understanding of CPCU, AIC, or ARM certificates is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently, multi‑task, and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to review the work of others, provide feedback, and approve underwriters’ quotations.
- Strong negotiation and presentation skills.
- Solid knowledge of rating and documentation management systems.
- Experience with admitted and non‑admitted accounts is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with agencies and internal colleagues.
- Experience with cross‑sell initiatives.
- Experience participating in industry/business functions to represent the company.
Salary range: $87,599.00 – $ (further compensation based on experience, location, and performance).
