Position Summary

The Work Comp Supervisor is responsible for overseeing workers’ compensation claim handling while maintaining an active claims load involving complex, high-exposure, disputed, litigated, or sensitive work comp matters. This position provides day-to-day guidance to work comp claim staff, supports consistent claim practices, reviews complex claims, monitors compliance with applicable workers’ compensation requirements, and helps ensure claims are handled timely, accurately, and in alignment with WMMIC standards, coverage requirements, and member service expectations.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & People Management
  • Provides supervision and guidance to workers’ compensation claim staff while maintaining an active claims load involving complex, high-exposure, disputed, litigated, or sensitive work comp matters.
  • Assists with onboarding, training, and development of workers’ compensation claim staff.
  • Sets clear expectations, monitors work quality, and supports consistent, high-quality workers’ compensation claim outcomes.
  • Provides coaching and practical guidance to address claim handling questions, file issues, compensability concerns, medical management, return-to-work issues, and development needs.
  • Manage team performance through conducting regular check-ins, providing feedback, and performance evaluations.
  • Provides workload oversight by assigning, balancing, and monitoring workers’ compensation claim workloads.
  • Serves as the first point of escalation for staff on complex claims, compensability, coverage, medical management, indemnity, litigation, procedural, or service issues.
  • Fosters a collaborative work environment that promotes quality, accountability, and teamwork.
Operational & Process Management
  • Supports and applies claim handling procedures, best practices, and productivity standards for workers’ compensation claims.
  • Performs file audits to ensure compliance with best practices, policies, applicable workers’ compensation requirements, and legal obligations.
  • Provides input on claims system functionality and reporting needs related to workers’ compensation claims, including claim trends, reserves, payments, litigation, and medical management information.
  • Reviews and approves workers’ compensation claim payments and reserves within assigned authority limits.
Strategic & Business Alignment
  • Supports departmental objectives and operational priorities related to workers’ compensation claim handling.
  • Collaborates with different departments to improve workers’ compensation claim outcomes, support return-to-work efforts, and advance company goals.
  • Provides claim information, trends, and operational input to support budget development and updates as requested.
