Materials Engineer
This is a hybrid role with three weeks per month onsite (Mon. – Thurs.). The fourth week is fully remote.
This role will lead fabric development for the Lands’ End Outfitters (LEO) uniform division, with a strong emphasis on fabric performance, testing, and compliance
. The position is responsible for driving materials from concept through bulk production, ensuring all fabrics meet both internal standards and third‑party certification requirements (including performance, durability, and regulatory compliance).
This role partners closely with Sourcing, Design, and Quality teams and reports to the Director of Raw Materials. The associate will play a key role in building and managing supplier relationships, while also bringing a more technical, testing‑driven approach to fabric development.
A critical part of this role is ensuring that all materials are properly validated through pre‑production testing, lab analysis, and third‑party certifications
, while supporting innovation and continuous improvement across the supply chain.
- Lead end-to-end fabric development from concept through commercialization for the LEO division
- Own and manage fabric testing protocols
, including performance validation, wear testing, and third‑party compliance (e.g., OEKO‑TEX, CPSC, and other regulatory standards) - Partner with internal teams to ensure materials meet quality, durability, and cost targets aligned with customer requirements
- Collaborate with external labs and suppliers to review test reports, troubleshoot failures, and drive corrective actions
- Build and maintain strong relationships with strategic fabric mills and testing partners
- Translate design intent into commercially viable, performance‑driven materials
- Drive innovation in fabric performance, sustainability, and compliance
- Develop and maintain a materials library aligned with brand and customer needs
- 5–8 years of experience in global fabric research and development. Experience in apparel retail and B2B, a plus.
- Strong background in fabric testing, textile science, or material performance
, ideally with experience in a testing lab or technical environment - Deep understanding of third‑party testing standards and certification processes
- Experience working with global suppliers and external testing labs
- Ability to interpret lab reports and translate findings into actionable decisions
- Strong cross‑functional collaboration and communication skills
- Detail‑oriented with a proactive, problem‑solving mindset
