In partnership with The Family League of Baltimore and community leaders, the George & Betsy Sherman Center is implementing the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program to promote family engagement and early learning in the Cherry Hill and Curtis Bay communities in Baltimore City. We are seeking a Parent Educator to join our home visiting team.
UMBC offers competitive compensation. This role starts at $20.21 per hour and includes 14 days of vacation, winter break, spring break, and personal days for regular full‑time roles. Tuition remission is also available.
- Conduct weekly home visits with approximately 10–15 families
- Serve as a primary liaison for Spanish‑speaking families, addressing inquiries via telephone, email, or in‑person interactions
- Collaborate with the HIPPY Program Coordinator, Assistant Director for Early Childhood Initiatives, and other team members to plan, implement, and attend family and community events supporting HIPPY and related early childhood initiatives
- Provide insights gained from Spanish‑speaking HIPPY families
- Offer oral interpretation and written translation of HIPPY flyers and materials for caregivers as needed
- Attend all staff training, including weekly curriculum meetings and professional development opportunities
- Complete all required program documentation, including home‑visiting logs, attendance logs, service referrals, and other program items
Required
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
Additional related experience and formal education may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year‑for‑year basis, with 30 college credits equivalent to one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework in Early Childhood Education and/or Family Services or a related field
- Bilingual English/Spanish – fluency in reading, writing, and speaking both languages
- At least one program year (30 weeks) working with HIPPY US in a part‑time capacity
- 1–2 years’ experience working with children and families birth to 5
- 1–2 years collaborating or working with community organizations
- Experience working with South Baltimore communities
- Experience working with adults in an educational setting
- Early Childhood Education course credits
A background check will be required.
