hQphotonics (hQp) is a start-up company formed by researchers from the California Institute of Technology. hQp is a leader in developing and commercializing state‑of‑the‑art, ultra‑low phase noise microwave oscillators using photonics approaches. Its current products are used in a range of applications including communications, test and measurement, and sensing. hQp is located in southern California.

We are hiring a full-time Research Engineer
. The hired individual will conduct advanced engineering research, simulations, and laboratory experiments on innovative integrated optical devices. The candidate will also contribute to ongoing and future programs with emphasis on nonlinear light propagation, scientific computing, and design and analysis of optical devices. The candidate will apply their knowledge and skills in optics, physics and electrical engineering to advance microwave photonic devices and systems.

and responsibilities

Specifically, the beneficiary is expected to perform the following job duties:

  • Research & Simulation: Analyze physical models, optical propagation, and device physics. Simulation and modeling of nonlinear light‑matter interactions based on chip‑scale photonics.
  • Experimentation & Testing: Conduct experiments with lasers, photonic integrated circuits, detectors, and analyzers.
  • Data Analysis: Process, analyze, and visualize experimental data to refine device performance and ensure reliability.
  • Documentation & Commercialization: Write research reports and papers, and collaborate with the engineering team to integrate technology development into product roadmaps.
Requirements

In order to perform the above job duties, the candidate must at least have a Master or PhD degree in electrical engineering or a closely related major. Moreover, the candidate must also be familiar with optical physics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and photonic devices and systems. The candidate shall be proficient in Python, C/C++ and high‑performance scientific computing, and numerical methods.
