Position OverviewBirch Agency is seeking a dedicated and fluent Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing within a school-based setting. This opportunity offers the chance to play a meaningful role in creating accessible and inclusive educational environments while supporting student communication, participation, and academic success.
The ideal candidate will have experience with classroom interpreting and a strong understanding of the educational and social‑emotional needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Key Responsibilities- Provide American Sign Language interpretation services as specified within student IEPs.
- Interpret classroom instruction, lectures, discussions, activities, school meetings, trainings, and conferences.
- Adapt interpretation methods to meet the varying communication needs and learning styles of students.
- Support communication between students, teachers, peers, and school staff.
- Interpret informal conversations and interactions during unstructured school times.
- Prepare and review classroom subject matter to ensure accurate and effective interpretation.
- Collaborate with Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH), classroom teachers, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and educational planning sessions.
- Support the development of a positive and inclusive Deaf‑friendly educational environment.
- Provide staff with information regarding interpretation processes and the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Associate’s degree in interpreting, deaf education, classroom interpreting, or related field preferred.
- OR an EIPA score of 3.5 or higher.
- Fluent in English and American Sign Language (ASL) required.
- Experience with educational/classroom interpreting preferred.
- Understanding of the academic and social challenges faced by students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary educational teams.
- CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), family members of Deaf individuals, or candidates with strong Deaf community involvement encouraged to apply.
