Responsibilities- Maintain a safe and secure environment for youth, themselves and other staff, and ensure an atmosphere with zero tolerance for escapes, abuse, harassment, and inappropriate conduct by staff.
- Assist in the operation of a secure detention center and ensure detained youth receive their constitutional rights, with emphasis on legal, medical, and mental health considerations.
- Assist the supervisor to ensure youth services and programming comply with court orders, departmental policies, procedures, and QA standards.
- Complete training to maintain proficiency in dispensing medications to youth and distribute medication in the absence of medical staff.
- Perform duties in Master Control, admissions, releases, and transportation as necessary.
- Supervise youth in all activities, maintain control through directives, counseling, and appropriate levels of Protective Action Response (PAR) when needed.
- Inspect facility, youth, visitors, and packages for contraband.
- Train and coach employees and orient them to facility policies and procedures.
- Act as supervisor in the absence of the supervisor.
- Prepare incident reports, detach youth movement records, document violations of procedures, and prepare youth for court appearances; transport and escort youth to medical, criminal justice, social services, and judicial facilities as required.
- Use security and emergency equipment to ensure safety and security of youth and facility.
- Conduct 10-minute checks, 5-minute checks, or constant sight and unsupervised monitoring for youth in confinement or designated as suicidal.
- Assess and analyze information from the Juvenile Justice Information System and maintain detainee counts as directed.
- Attend and complete required training; respond to emergencies with CPR, AED, and First Aid per certification.
- Maintain a valid driver license and report changes within 72 hours; comply with vehicle use policies.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations.
- Ability to prepare and maintain reports and records.
- Ability to work effectively with youth, co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
- Knowledge of good hygiene and facility policies and procedures.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions in a timely manner.
- Ability to determine appropriate levels of force and observe changes in youth behavior.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback to correct behavior and maintain sanitary facilities.
- All prospective candidates will be subject to sex offender checks, criminal background checks, and pre-employment drug screening for direct care positions.
- DJJ participates in E-Verify.
- A valid driver’s license is required; if hired with an out-of-state license, obtain a Florida license within 30 days.
- Positions may require transportation of youth; a three-year driving record is required where applicable.
- Successful candidates must be certified in DJJ direct care training or obtain certification within 180 days of employment.
- All candidates may be required to take the Ergometric IMPACT Assessment and Training Test before consideration.
- Be at least 19 years of age and a high school graduate or equivalent.
- Not have disqualifying felony or certain misdemeanor convictions; adhere to fingerprinting and background investigations requirements.
