Physics & Astronomy Instructional Support Technician

Location: Humboldt

Position Summary:

Full‑time, non‑exempt, 12‑month pay‑plan position with a one‑year probationary period in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Provides comprehensive support services for faculty and teaching staff, including designing, fabricating, maintaining, repairing, and updating scientific equipment used in lecture demonstrations, laboratory and activity experiments, and Observatory equipment. Also responsible for purchasing supplies, maintaining inventory, bookkeeping, and IT support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain, prepare, issue, and repair scientific equipment and supplies for laboratory and activity sessions (40%).
  • Design and construct laboratory equipment, experiments, and classroom demonstrations (35%).
  • Supervise and maintain Observatory and related equipment (10%).
  • Handle purchasing, bookkeeping, and budget documentation (5%).
  • Provide departmental IT support (5%).

Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services in a unit or discipline; or two years of college coursework (16 semester units) involving extensive use of materials in a related discipline; or four years of college coursework (16 semester units) with extensive use of materials.
  • Preferably an undergraduate degree in Physics or a physical science.

Benefits:

  • Salary range: $4,184–$6,096 per month (Step 1–20) with anticipated hiring range $4,184–$5,307 per month (Step 1–13).
