Traffic Control Maintenance Worker

This position is responsible for a variety of duties, including fabricating, painting and installing traffic control signs, legends, symbols and devices in accordance with traffic and vehicle control codes and ordinances; operating computerized layout equipment, layouts of information and specialized signs; operating and maintaining a specialized road striping vehicle with multiple air, hydraulic and airless paint systems and a glass bead dispensing system to paint striping and reflective beads on roads in accordance with relevant codes and ordinances;

preparing stencils, spaces and aligns stencils and paints road surface control legends; applying reflective, rumble and other raised pavement surface markings; performing and assisting in the installation of traffic warning, speed control, and other signs; painting traffic guards, barricades and raised traffic bars on pavement.

Work Schedule:

Summer hours:
Mon. thru Thurs. 6:30AM to 5:00PM 1/2 hr lunch. Winter hours:
Mon. thru Friday 7:30AM to 4:00PM 1/2 hr lunch.

Under general supervision, paints traffic control markings on pavement; fabricates, installs, repairs, and maintains traffic warning and other signs; and performs related duties as assigned.

Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory and management personnel. Exercises direct supervision over staff in field.

This is a journey-level classification in the Traffic Control Maintenance Worker series. Positions at this level perform the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, exercising judgment and initiative, over traffic control crews and their work. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

This class is distinguished from Senior Traffic Control Maintenance Worker in that the latter is the functional lead level of the series with responsibility for leading the Traffic Control Maintenance Crew.

Fabricates, paints and installs traffic control signs, legends, symbols and devices in accordance with traffic and vehicle control codes and ordinances; removes and replaces signposts with jackhammer, shovels and/or post hole diggers and pours concrete to anchor posts; affixes signs to posts at proper height. Operates computerized layout equipment, layouts of information and specialized signs. Operates and maintains a specialized road striping vehicle with multiple air, hydraulic and airless paint systems and a glass bead dispensing system to paint striping and reflective beads on roads in accordance with relevant codes and ordinances;

mixes paint, loads truck tanks and loads truck with necessary equipment and supplies. Prepares stencils, spaces and aligns stencils and paints road surface control legends; applies reflective, rumble and other raised pavement surface markings. Performs and assists in the installation of traffic warning, speed control, and other signs; paints traffic guards, barricades and raised traffic bars on pavement. Fabricates, maintains and stocks signs and materials;

fabricates or refurbishes signs as necessary. Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools, including air compressors, airless spray guns, vacuum equipment, drill press, brushes, line eraser, center line machine, stencils, drills, pavement breakers, rivet guns, ladders, etc. Drives paint and sign trucks and operates auxiliary equipment; inspects vehicles and equipment and performs maintenance and modification work; maintains vehicles in clean, safe operating condition;

reports needed repairs. Observes safe driving and work practices; uses safety equipment and devices; secures work site from traffic and other hazards; attends safety meetings. Keeps basic records related to work performed, materials used, and markings placed. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of techniques and materials used in traffic control painting and signing operations. Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code related to traffic painting and signing operations and the State Uniform Sign Chart and Caltrans Traffic Manual. Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to the field. Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.

Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and ordinances relevant to the area(s) of responsibility. Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and County staff.
