Environmental Resource Specialist – Seasonal Positions
Ramsey County is recruiting two temporary seasonal Environmental Resource Specialist positions in the Public Works Department's Environmental Services Division. One focuses on Water Quality; the other on Environmental Maintenance & Inspections.
Key Responsibilities – Water Quality- Obtain water samples from 29 lakes on a rotating basis to assess chemical and biological properties such as turbidity, phosphorous, nitrogen, chloride, and chlorophyll
A. - Use a YSI multiparameter sonde to profile pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and temperature of lakes.
- Conduct fish surveys, zooplankton, phytoplankton, and
E. coli beach testing; perform public outreach; document results for water quality improvement. - Organize annual weed and algae control programs, coordinate with lake improvement associations, and monitor contractor work.
- Perform soil testing and evaluate hydric soils; conduct field inspections of engineering projects to ensure environmental protection compliance.
- Investigate and initiate remediation of spills or contamination on county properties per state and federal regulations.
- Inspect county facilities and infrastructure – lake outlets, storm sewer, stormwater treatment systems, erosion control projects – and prepare lists for maintenance materials and actions.
- Provide GIS services: coordinate, initiate, implement conservation programs; create and maintain GIS databases and maps; analyze spatial and non-spatial information.
- Inspect properties for diseased or hazardous trees, estimate volumes for removal, prepare specifications for contractors, draft annual reports, monitor expenditures.
- Obtain or possess tree inspector license; knowledge of native and invasive Upper Midwest species.
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Forestry, Conservation Biology, Natural Resource Management, or related field.
- No specific experience required; equivalent combination of education and related experience acceptable.
- Valid driver’s license.
Criminal background checks are required. Adoption of E-Verify is required. Ramsey County participates in the federal E-Verify program.
