Position Purpose
To perform a variety of duties and enhance public safety by enforcing Building, City, State and Federal laws through code enforcement by performing technical building inspections, reviewing construction plans and enforcing compliance with building codes, regulations and ordinances. This position involves skilled, detailed inspections and enforcement work pertaining to private properties, houses, businesses, restaurants, industrial establishments, oil and gas wells, and other structures within the City limits.
Officers are responsible for keeping detailed records of all inspections or investigations and the action taken for compliance. Priorities are based on the severity of the complaint to the health, safety and welfare of the community. Work is performed with considerable independence within established codes, regulations and technical guidelines and is subject to review through daily conferences.
- Inspect industrial, commercial and residential buildings during stages of construction and remodeling to insure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
- Examine plans and specifications of new construction, additions and alterations to residential, commercial and industrial buildings to determine compliance with codes, ordinances and regulations.
- Approve the issuance of building and zoning permits, issue job permits and plumbing and mechanical licenses.
- Issue notices to comply on violations; maintain records of history of facts for possible legal actions.
- Assist architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and office; explain and interpret requirements and restrictions.
- Locate water and sewer lines on City maps and figure fees that property owners are charged for connecting to City services.
- Inspect single family homes, apartment buildings, businesses and vacant lots for zoning and nuisance compliance; conduct follow up inspections as needed.
- Prepare required monthly activity reports.
- Respond to and resolve citizen inquiries and complaints.
- Make and maintain detailed reports on all inspections performed and violations noted.
- Investigate citizen complaints for violations throughout the City limits.
- Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum 3 years of experience in work related field preferred
- Must obtain the Residential Building, Electrical, Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector licenses issued by the State of Oklahoma within 24 months of hire.
- Valid driver’s license
- Knowledge of engineering principals, practices, and methods; design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precise technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
- Knowledge of applicable city policies, laws, codes, regulations, statutes and standards.
- Management skills to analyze programs, policies, and operational needs.
- Ability to work and interact with departments throughout the organization and the general public.
- Ability to read and understand technical documents, codes and plans; ability to speak effectively before groups.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written).
- Accepted safety standards and methods of building construction for commercial, industrial and residential buildings.
- Major types of building construction, materials and methods.
- Principles and techniques of building inspection and plans examining work.

This job has been classified as a “safety sensitive” position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. In this position, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, which might include random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening.
Possession of a Medical Marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for Marijuana.
