Heavy Equipment Operator - Water Distribution

Job Overview

Duties include, but are not limited to, operation and maintenance/upkeep of equipment. Works with and assists the line crew in digging ditches, pot holing, hoisting material, tools, equipment and any related work with a backhoe. Additional duties include assisting line crews with maintenance of water and/or wastewater utilities, digging near other utilities such as pressured gas utilities, electric utilities, phone utilities, cable television lines, fiber optic lines and back filling jobs upon completion.

Position requires after normal business hours, on‑call, and work on appointed weekends.

• Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies.
• Operates trucks and construction or power equipment, such as mechanized broom, backhoe, man‑lift, dump truck, snowplow, front‑end loader, hydraulic excavators, skid steers and jetter truck.
• Operates jackhammers, mowers, saws and other small equipment and tools to maintain utility systems.
• Works with and assists the line crew in digging ditches and trenches, hoisting material, tools, equipment, and any related work with a backhoe or front‑end loader.
• Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or repairs to the supervisor; cleans equipment.
• Assists in the installing and maintenance of traffic control devices.
• Plows snow and salts roads according to departmental policy.
• Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.

• High School Diploma or GED

• Valid Oklahoma driver license
• Possess or ability to obtain a CDL commercial driver license within 12 months
• Possess or ability to obtain within 12 months a Class D Water Works Operator license

• Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities including walking, standing, bending, sitting, pushing and pulling for extended periods of time.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Computer knowledge and basic record‑keeping skills.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Physical activities may include standing, walking, sitting, using hands, gripping, handling, finger use, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, tasting, and smelling. Activities may involve lifting up to 25 pounds while standing, lifting up to 50 pounds while walking, and working outdoors.

This job has been classified as a “safety sensitive” position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. In this position, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, which might include random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening.
